Abstract   A clinical study was performed the 83 cases of primary breast cancer treated during 12 years from Mar. 1980 to Mar. 1992 at the Department of General Surgery, St. Benedict Hospital, Pusan. The following results were obtained: 1) The most prevalent age group was 5th decade(31 cases, 37.3%) The number of the patients who showed 6 months duration of symptoms was 46 cases(55.4 %) and 12 months duration of symptoms, 67 cases(80.6%). 3) The most frequent clinical symptom was palpable breast mass(78 cases, 94.0%). 4) The primary tumor was located on the left side in 45 cases(54.2%), right side in 38 cases (45.3%) The most frequent site of location was upper outer quadrant(47 cases, 56.6%). 5) The most frequent tumor size was 2-5 cm in diameter(47 cases, 56.7%). 6) According to TNM system there were 3 cases(3.6%) of stage 0, 6 cases(7.2%) of stage I, 47 cases(56.6%) of stage II, 17 cases(20.5%) of stage III, 10 cases(12.l%) of stage IV. 7) The most frequent pathologic type was infiltrating ductal carcinoma(65 cases, 78.3%). 8) Axillary lymph node involvement was noted in 50 cases(60.2%). 9) Auchincloss' transverse incision was used in 55 cases(66.3%). 10) The operation types in 83 cases were reviewed; Auchincloss' modified radical mastectomy in 59 cases(71.1%), Pateys modified radical mastectomy in 8 cases(9.6%), Standard radical mastectomy in 8 cases(9.6%), Simple mastectomy with axillary dissection in 5 cases(6.1%), Simple mastectomy in 2 cases(2.4%), Quadrantectomy in 1 case(1.2%). 1) Adjuvant chemotherapy and hormonal therapy were performed in 65 cases(78.3%) l2) The most frequent postoperative complication was seroma(l1 cases, 13.3%). l3) The 5 year survival rate in 83 patients was 67.5/ according to Kaplan-Meier Estimate, 100k in Stage 0, I, 94% in stage II, 68% in stage III, 20% in stage IV. And 5 year survival rate was 52% in axillary lymph node involvement group and 77% in no axillary lymph node involve- ment group, 74% in Infiltrating ductal ca, and 89% in Medullary ca.
